When you actually need to merge PDFs
The most common reason people end up here is paperwork that arrived in pieces — a mortgage application split across a dozen scanned attachments, a tax return with 1099s mailed separately, or a contract whose signature pages were emailed back one at a time. Combining them into a single PDF makes the file easier to upload to a portal, attach to one email, or store under one filename.
Practical notes: most banking and government portals accept files up to 25 MB, and a few cap at 10 MB. If your merged file exceeds that, run it through Compress PDF afterwards — image-heavy scans typically shrink 40–70% with no visible quality loss. Unlike server-based mergers, this tool preserves form fields, hyperlinks, bookmarks, and digital signatures from the source files because pdf-lib operates on the original PDF object graph rather than re-rendering pages. If a source file is encrypted, decrypt it in your PDF reader first; merging cannot bypass an owner password.
